Explore spectacular ocean side cliffs, lush desert ranges and canyon trails as you ride your personal 420 Honda All terrain vehicle. For those looking for a challenging and exciting ATV ride, look no further!

Your short drive from the hotel will take you to Rancho Carisuva along the mighty Pacific Ocean. At this ranch you will receive an orientation on the proper operating techniques of your ATV, as well as free time to explore a typical Baja Californian ranch with 43 horses, goats, friendly donkeys, chickens, a fresh water well and a traditionally built desert hut (Baja California Style).

Hop on and follow your guide for a glimpse into Baja’s rugged terrain where along your ride, you will see cactus over 20 ft high towering over the trail, wild animals, exotic desert flora and incredible views. Stops will be made along the way to teach you about the desert flora and fauna as well as a stop at a look out point over the Pacific Ocean. Don’t forget your camera as the sights on this tour are one of a kind.

From January through March keep an eye out towards the ocean as the migrating whales come so close to shore that you can smell their sprays.

By Fernando Rodriguez

While many visitors arrive with some aprehension regarding Mexico’s War on Drugs and how it might affect their visit to Cabo, locals here have their own concerns—voicing their attitudes and thoughts recently, in a reporter on the street journalistic interview with the local free newpaper, Gringo Gazette. Hotel Employee Beatriz Oropeza believes Felipe Calderon’s on-going war, costing some 40,000 lives since it’s 4 year inception has to continue, stating, ”It is impossible to stop the war on drugs. It has to be done. The fight must go on.”

Restaurant worker Gustavo Robles echoes a sentiment shared by everyone in Los Cabos and by people in tune with the safety of this region of Mexico, saying, ”Thank God we are exempt here in Cabo.” Delivery Driver Salvador Reyes understands the futility of this drug war, commenting that, ”People are not going to stop using drugs, so it should be legalized. Many lives would be saved and the money spent on the war could be better used on something to benefit the people.”

In last weeks speech to Stanford University’s 2011 graduationg class, Mexican President Felipe Calderon encouraged them to move forward positively in life, announcing to the crowd of graduates, their parents, family and all present media, ”You must never stop defending your ideas and dreams..Do not hesitate in your efforts because in the end man’s power to create is bigger than his power to destroy.”

And here in Cabo San Lucas, Electrician Norman Garcia agrees, stating that, ”To do nothing would be much worse and many more innocent people would die if the drug lords were in charge.”

So while the governement of Mexico and people of this rising nation adjust to the changes brought about by this continuing battle against drugs and the people that manufacture, package, transfer and ultimately sell the illicit and illegal drugs to the biggest drug consuming country in the world, The United States of America, our neighbor to the north and ally in this struggle to end the flow of drugs from Mexico to America.

Hotel Employee Alejandro Ronaldo, summed it up best with his remark that, ”The war on drugs needs to stop. There can never be any winner as long as people want drugs.” A statement akin to the United States and it’s largely unpopular prohibition crusade of the 1920-30′s against alcohol and alcoholic beverages.

The passing by US Congress of the Volstead Act in 1919, known as the dredded National Prohibition Act, proved at the cost of many lives as well, that governments face a daunting task in attempts to eliminate the stimulated proliferation of rampant underground, organized and widespread criminal activity. Which is Mexico’s current undertaking and resolve to clean up the country in a war that thankfully, does not involve Baja California Sur, nor our treasured piece of earth’s great Cabo San Lucas paradise, San Jose del Cabo, La Paz, Todos Santos or the East Cape. Cabo San Lucas is completeley safe from this war on drugs in the same way that the Prohibition Alcohol Wars of Chicago and New York did not affect the folks in Kanas, Kentucky, Missiouri or California, Oregon.

I made the big move in 2002, and it has been the best decision I have ever made. I am definitely a warm-weathered soul and love living on the ocean, with beautiful scenery and an amazing lifestyle. The reason why I love Los Cabos so much is that even on your worst day, you can walk to the beach, sit in the sand and bask in the scenery, which motivates thousands of people to come to each and every year. I consider myself a very blessed individual.

On the wedding day, two of their friends were present as witnesses to their nuptials on Pedregal Beach. A Mexican trio serenaded the bride as she processed to her waiting groom beside the bamboo canopy adorned with her favorite flowers, colorful Gerber daisies. After the ceremony, the bride and groom began a two hour photo shoot starting on the beach, then to the marina, and finally with a horse drawn carriage ride around town at sunset. Their dinner reception was held at a local Mexican restaurant where I had their wedding cake with her favorite flavors waiting. It was truly special and romantic and they absolutely loved every minute of it, as did I.

By Fernando B. Rodriguez

A Las Vegas, Nevada based company preparing to launch construction and development of a gambling resort casino on the 26 acre parcel across the street from the Cabo San Lucas Country Club golf course has put their auspicious plans on hold after receiving a Construction License and all related paperwork and environmental approvals to commence building the 37 million dollar project.

The 5 star Casino Resort will feature 254 rooms with memberships available and 144 luxury condominiums furnished with spectacular views of both the nearby golf course and the Land’s End Arch in San Lucas Bay. The Vegas, Nevada Company´s decision to put building the casino on ice, is partially based on the much debated, still unratified resolution to the 1947 Law making gambling in Mexico illegal.

Gambling has been an active part of Mexican culture since the 19th century, when France made an effort to colonize the country. During the 34 year reign of Dictator-President Porfirio Diaz, French-style casinos were popular, thriving, businesses in cities all across country. The Mexican Revolution of 1910 was the end to Diaz’s 3 decades in power and put the gambling industry out of business for a temporary suspension.

Returning to prominence in the 1920s along U.S.-Mexico border towns during the alcohol prohibition of the United States, when many Americans popularized going to Mexico where people could gamble and booze, legally.

In California, the glamorous Hollywood jet set turned Tijuana’s Agua Caliente Casino into the preferred playground of th rich and famous. The city’s own Margarita Lola Cansino was regularly seen there during the wee hours of the night, drink in hand, gambling away in the casinos plush surroundings as Tijuana’s very own sultry diva known to the world as the actress and sex symbol, Rita Hayworth.

The palatial Agua Caliente Casino ownership was rumored to include 3 American gangsters with Bugsy Siegal strong-arming his way into a piece of the Caliente action. This very lucrative business’s association to organized crime and corruption ultimately led to the reform elections campaign of President Lazaro Cardenas, who in 1935, declared gambling illegal in Mexico. In 1947, a gaming law was passed, which forced most casinos to shut their doors and fold up shop. Opponents citing Casino ties to drug lords using gambling establishmenst as money laundering schemes and fears that greater foreign investment will lead to more foreign control over Mexico. Stating for the record as well, concerns by citizens who feel strongly that gambling is morally wrong and will lead to the decline of traditional family values in their country of Mexico

In 1989, the Tijuana-based Caliente received permission from the Mexican government to offer sports betting. And while this momentous government action is not a outright approval of legalized gambling, it certainly moved the country one step in the right direction of providing what has long been a custom in Mexico dating back to the Aztec Empire where wagering on games or sports that tested skill and endurance was the common norm.
Caliente is the largest race and sports book in Mexico, as they have well over 50 betting parlors across the country, as well as offering bets by phone and over the Internet.

Totoloque was a gambling game popular in Aztec Mexico at the time. Bernal Diaz, the Spanish historian, wrote that Cortés and Moctezuma II played totoloque together. A contest of attempts to hit a specified target with gold pellets.

In 2004, the administration of Vicente Fox failed in their attempts to either overturn or clarify the use and limits of the 1947 anti-gambling law. Operating Casinos are currently relying on an amparo (a court injunction protecting certain constitutional rights), while openly featuring video gambling machines. Bingo, raffling, and certain other numbers-based games which were approved but regulated by action of the Secretaria de Gobernacion in 2000. And since, the federal legislature continues debating issues of the 1947 law, everybody assumes it will just be a matter of time before ”Las Vegas-style” casinos are allowed to operate in Mexico.

”Since there has been some legislative discourse recently, the Las Vegas Company has chosen to wait a little before moving forward until receiving updated news and clarification on the multitude of gray areas within that 1947 law”, said a source familiar with the treatise.

La Secretaria de Gobernacion (Similar to the U.S. Ministry of the Interior), which oversees the gambling and raffles department, took recent contemporary action and issued regulations which would allow the operation of certain numbers-based games.
”What is illegal right now are sit down with dealer card games like Poker, Texas Hold Em, 21, open table dice and other typical Vegas style games like roulette.” continued telling us our source–wishing to reamain anonymous for this story.

The Mexican Supreme Court, in a long awaited — and in recent times expected— decision, ruled on January 22, 2007 that the Regulation of the Federal Gaming and Raffles Law is constitutional.

The legality of the Regulation, upheld by the Supreme Court ruling pertained to controversial permits that were issued in 2005, for remote betting centers (offsite books) and numbers parlors, which are now revalidated. Meaning permit holders with gaming establishments already in operation will stay open, and others who may have hesitated due to legal doubts can now forge ahead.
Hence, the 37 million dollar Las Vegas, Nevada company interest in building a casino that would rival the historic, legendary, Auguas Caliente in Tijuana. Mexico’s antiquated anti-gambling law appears to be a ban that could soon be lifted, considering the fact that the Supreme Court also sent a strong message to Congress that the 1947 Law must be modernized.

The legal age to gamble (and drink) in Mexico is 18.

About two weeks after the Supreme Court ruling, Senate members of the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) expressed their support for the installation of full-fledged casinos in Mexico. Saying that the time has come for clandestine gaming activities to end, and for taxes that should exceed U.S. $800 million annually to be paid.

On February 13, 2007 the Mexican Senate sent a 6 page “excitativa” to the Chamber of Deputies, a formal request urging the other chamber to move legislation that would reform the 1947 Law, and allow new casinos to operate legally.

Another factor pushing Mexico’s case for complete and utterly legal gambling is that the country possesses the sad distinction of having lowest tax colection regime in the western hemisphere. Only11 % of the gross domestic product is represented in taxes in Mexico, which when compared to Argenta and Brazil at 20 % for example is cause enough to legalize gambling and thereby creating what many consider an major addition to tourism.

”Lawful gaming should be expanded to allow well regulated and properly supervised casinos, like the kind the Vegas, Nevada group envisions for Cabo San Lucas,” commented our source. People are presently free to bet on football, basketball, baseball, soccer, horse racing, dog racing, boxing matches and enjoy a variety of video slot machine-style games.
So casinos — while technically illegal, are open and operating in full view of the authorities and several more are in various stages of development, despite this ambiguous legality which for the moment has stalled the very promising, ambitious Cabo San Lucas Casino, on property that is free and clear of debt and waiting for another tourist attraction to spring up and open soon

Arriving with their ice coolers on wheels for their return trip, loaded hopefully later–with the catch of the day–Marlin, tuna, red snapper/rock cod, or dorado (mahi mahi) from the abundance of fish in our Sea of Cortez and Baja California Sur Penninsula Pacific Ocean waters, teeming with fishing tournaments, history and lore.

Same goes for visitors rolling into town with their pets in a similar traveling protective cage. They arrive with their ”kiddies” in tow, whether they be feline or canine, large or small, cute and not so cute. And they mean business too. Wherefore, fisherman generally stay in East Cape, everyone arriving with pets will check in at the few hotel/resorts that can accomodate them and their critters.

The premier destination is Las Ventanas Al Paraiso, which doesn’t just accept pets, but has programs specifically designed to cater to them. Las Ventanas is a tremendously wonderful property located within the tourist corridor near San Jose del Cabo, featuring spectacular Sea of Cortez views, and offering a full menu of delights for four-legged jet-lagged. Garfield or Lassie wannabe’s.

This very unique, posh resort has developed special menus, massages, and treatments to keep pets in as luxurious circumstances as their owners. Some pets even lay out by the pool in sunglasses. Extremely pampered pooches staying at Las Ventanas enjoy the gastronomically scrumptious Canine Delights menu, which include selections like the specialty Rin Tin Tin (shredded braised beef and steamed rice), and Doggie Delights (doggy chews, rawhides and jerky). Additionally, all canine and feline cuisine is served in sleek modern metallic bowls with faux gemstones on a bone shaped placemat. .

Pet menus are available for breakfast, lunch. The resort charges $50 USD per stay per pet, and there is a 40 lb. maximum weight limit on pets and they must be leashed at all times while on property. And if that weren’t enough pet pampering, Las Ventanas also has personnel readily available to walk any visitor’s big dogs or puppies arounf their plush landscape..

Tops on the list of concerns tourists go through when considering to vacation in Cabo is safety. While making their plans, they hear numerous objections from neighbors, family, and friends, worried and warning them about the situation in Mexico, based exclusively on the negative media reports they have seen on television, read in the papers or broadcast on the radio.

Once in Cabo, visitors from the US and Canada immediately realize how truly beautiful, wonderful, serene, and simplistically safe cabo San Lucas is. For there are no tanks anywhere in sight, no caravans of armed Mexican soldiers patrolling every corner of the city, neither in San Lucas nor in nearby San Jose del Cabo.

Instead, tourists find the crown jewel of Baja California. Encountering upon arrival, a friendly, tranquil community, where the beaches are as nature intended and the year round, warm, un-winter like weather a genuine thing of beauty. No Narco-turf wars, no kidnappings, nothing at all—As portrayed in American media.

´´It’s sooo totally safe,´´ declares Danny Vasquez of Boston, Massachusetts, USA. ´´Even safer than back home, actually.´´ A young couple from Toronto, Canada echoed the same sentiment, adding further of how their timeshare experience educated them on Mexican Geography, the border Narco-wars, and the complete and utter safety of Los Cabos. ´´We didn’t feel this safe when we’ve gone to places like New York and D.C.’’

Residents though, recognize what tourists and visitors eventually learn about the small town feel of Cabo San Lucas, wherefore, this area is fast becoming the retirement destination to many Canadians and Americans because of its safety, tranquility and exquisite landscape of beaches, resorts, and sunny year round climate, even as The United States continues to paint the current drug related struggles as a nationwide crisis in Mexico when Baja California continues to exist like an entity or government unto its own. Separated from the mainland by the Sea of Cortez to remain free of the crime ridden conflicts near the border and free also, from the common uncontainable crime of most major metropolitan cities in the US, Canada or Mexico.

Once Mexico announced selecting Cabo San Lucas in Baja California Sur as host for the G20 Summit on June 20 of this year, plans immediately called for the building of a convention center to host this semi annual gathering, bringing together the leaders and finance ministers of 20 of the world’s most powerful countries. Respected intellectual and financial representatives from allover the globe meeting at one time and one place, which collectively represent more than 90 percent of the global gross domestic product (GDP), around 80 percent of world trade volume and more than two-thirds of the world’s population.

16,000 visitors, including United States of America President Barrack Obama, are expected to attend the G20 Summit from the list of current member countries of South Africa, Canada, Mexico, United States, Argentina, Brazil, China, Japan, South Korea, India, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Turkey, the EU, France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, and Australia.

To accommodate this vital and grandiose meeting of the world’s finacial powers , Mexican president Felipe Calderon allocated more than $180 million to build a new convention center in San Lucas, as well as the construction of a four-lane highway stretching from the airport at San Jose del Cabo to Cabo San Lucas.

“Hosting the G20 Summit in Los Cabos is a tremendous opportunity for our destination as well as for the country of Mexico,” said Gonzalo Franyutti President of the Los Cabos Hotel Association and Convention and Visitors Bureau after recieving news of being awarded this prestiguous event. “Los Cabos has the exclusive appeal, a contemporary tourism infrastructure and the safety record required to host an event of this global caliber.” stated Mr Franyutti, prior to learning of a glitch regarding the land upon where the convention center is to be built. Property contested as to having two owners not willing to relent nor allow for the intended convention center construction site.

Meeting extensively with Patricia Espinoza, Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Relations, as well as with Gloria Guevara Manzo, the country’s Secretary of Tourism, to remedy the situation, Gonzalo Franyutti stated at press time, ”The situation involving the two parties was referred to the Gobierno Municipal where disagreements found solutions and current architectual aspects of the project are being revised over last minute details by the Mexican Federation before finalizing, in a short time, the necessary construction plans of what will be a wonderful convention center greatly benefitting our city of Cabo San Lucas.”

Mr Franyutti assures us nothing will hinder nor delay the construction of this all-important G-20 meeting place, stating, ”The Convention Center will be ready in accordance with all approved plans submitted to the Federal Government where they informed us weeks ago that there was great interest in having Los Cabos host the meeting since it has many advantages as a Mexican destination, such as security, climate and highway infrastructure. Los Cabos badly needed a convention center in order to host an event of this magnitude and everything is on schedule to meet that demand.”

The G-20 Summit has been holding these semi-annual meetings since 2008, the most recent Summit held in Seoul, South Korea in Novenber, 2010. More specifically, the G-20 grew after the Washington Summit of 2009 from what began as the G-8, which formed the main economic council of the wealthiest nations at that time. Their initial formation being to collectively address, review, study and promote discussion of policy issues towards the promotion of international financial stability.

The group also seeks to address critical finacial and economic issues that go beyond the responsibilites of any one organization or country.

The G20 was originally established in 1999, in the wake of the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis, bringing together advanced and emerging economies to stabilize the global financial market. The economic crisis that spread throughout the world in 2008, called for the G20 members to further strengthen international cooperation. Since then, G20 Summits have been held in Washington (2008), London and Pittsburgh (2009), in Toronto and Seoul (2010) and this year, the G20 will take place in Cannes, France in the fall of November 3-4, before landing here in Cabo San Lucas. May 2012.

And while the group continues to grow in stature, they hardly are meeting to find new ways to screw the world over, as some have jokingly remarked.

In London the G20 announced the end of bank secrecy; since then there has been unprecedented action to implement things initiated and now globally endorsed standards of transparency and exchange of information in tax matters. Since April over 90 tax information exchange agreements have been signed and over 60 tax treaties negotiated or renegotiated to incorporate the standards. All major on and offshore centres have endorsed those standards set by the G-20 and those which had impediments to implementing them are in the process of removing them and falling in accordance with the G-20 changes.

Awarding Los Cabos the G-20 Summit has also called for the expansion of the tiny, federal, military-guarded and manned airport in San Lucas. Wherefore, the highest security will undoubtedly be accorded many of the forgeign dignitaries choosing to arrive in San Lucas under more private auspisces than would be afforded them at the Los Cabos International Airport in San Jos del Cabo, more than 40 minutes away.

Excavation has alreday started towards updating and inproving the small airstrip, with civil engineers busy surveying the land in preparation for the 2-4 day event transforming and pushing Cabo San Lucas into another echelon of the world’s elite.

Note: Many resorts do not have a swimmable beach; the only swimmable beaches are Chileno bay, Santa Maria, Palmilla and the main Medano Beach. Under current and big waves is the reason.

Fernando Rodriguez

While many visitor’s to Cabo are told of the wondrous natural marvels of Sierra de la Laguna, there exists an equally fascinating exquisite splendor that is the San Dionisio Canyon. An area so resplendent with the smell and aroma of earth and the visual beauty of endemic flowers, fauna, and breathtaking mountainous views appreciated by lovers of such places like California’s Yosemite National Park and Arizona’s Grand Canyon.

In order to get to San Dionsisio Canyon visitors must take the highway leading to La Paz that passes Los Barriles, which in itself is a very nice drive. It’s the road that leads through San Jose del Cabo and passes teh airport. It’s also highly recommended that visitor’s rent an SUV 4X4 in order see God’s natural beauty located right here on the Sea of Cortez side of Los Cabos.

One only needs to carefully maneuver past the little cities and towns of Santa Anita, Cadueno, and Miraflores before veering left into the mountains and eventually arriving at this magical place in Cabo where families have lived for generations and continue to welcome tourists and strangers with warmth and a friendliness found only in rural backwoods Mexico.

There are cabins available at San Dionisio Canyon with modest accommodations. A bed, bathroom, running water and solar powered electricity for the small fridge. And there are a few conditions–”Do not kill anything that lives or grows there and do not pick any fruit or plant unless unless you eat it. The only thing you can take is your camera. Mexico’s independence would not be effectively declared from Spain in the Declaration of Independence of the Mexican Empire until September 27, 1821, after a decade of war.

There is no scholarly consensus as to what exactly Hidalgo said at the time, as the book The Course of Mexican History states “The exact words of this most famous of all Mexican speeches are not known, or, rather, they are reproduced in almost as many variations as there are historians to reproduce them.”

The book goes on to claim that “the essential spirit of the message is…’My children: a new dispensation comes to us today. Will you receive it? Will you free yourselves? Will you recover the lands stolen three hundred years ago from your forefathers by the hated Spaniards? We must act at once… Will you defend your religion and your rights as true patriots? Long live our Lady of Guadalupe! Death to bad government!”

Hidalgo essentially told them that the time for action on their part had now come. When he asked, ‘Will you be slaves of Napoleon or will you as patriots defend your religion, your hearts and your rights?’ there was a unanimous cry, ‘We will defend to the utmost! This event draws up to half a million spectators from all over Mexico and tourists worldwide. On the morning of September 16, or Independence Day, the nationalmilitary parade starts in the Zócalo, passes the Hidalgo Memorial and ends on the Paseo de la Reforma, Mexico City’s main boulevard.

A similar celebration occurs in cities and towns all over Mexico, and in Mexican embassies and consulates worldwide, on the 15th or the 16th. The mayor (or governor, in the case of state capitals and ambassadors or consuls in the case of overseas celebrations), rings a bell and gives the traditional words, with the names of Mexican independence heroes included, ending with the threefold shout of Viva Mexico!, the bell ringing for the second time, the waving of the Mexican flag and the mass singing of the National Anthem by everyone in attendance. In the 19th century, it became common practice for Mexican presidents in their final year in office to re-enact the Grito in Dolores Hidalgo, rather than in the National Palace.

The following day, September 16 is Independence Day in Mexico and is considered a patriotic holiday. This day is marked by parades, patriotic programs, drum and bugle and marching band competitions, and special programs on the national and local media outlets, even concerts.

Since the Mexican federal government’s promise of 7,000 trees for a reforestation project never materialized at a neighborhood north of San Jose, miles before you get to the airport, the folks at this neighborhood are turning a dirt patch into what they have named Monte Real Park. This is a piece of property the size of two football fields that was also donated by the federal governement to the folks in that neigborhood back in 2008. At that time the feds promised to build the neighbors a park, but that never happened.

The empty dirt lot is located in a neighborhood north of San Jose, towards the aiport, near the sports center named Deportivo Unidad.Home median prices in this middle class neighborhood of Monte Real range from one bedrooms priced at $36,000 U.S. to five bedroom houses for $80,000.

In May 2008, the group of dedicated Monte Real neighbors gathered together to decide how to best use the empty lot awarded them by the federal government and the people all voted unanimously to make it a recreational park. A month later, the group formally became a committee representing the unified neighbors. From there, committte members held meetings every other week, planning how to create a good park for everyone. By August, they were recognized as an non proft organization and the park project officially began taking shape as an ecologicaly sound area for going green.

Six months later they initiated their park clean-up campaign while still waiting for the more than 7,000 shade trees promised by the federal government. To this date, the feds have shown up with only about 100 little bitty trees. But, these poeple didn’t just sit around and wait for the other 6,900 trees to arrive, they hustled out to nurseries to ask for donations of trees.

The Ecology Department of Cabo later donated 80 ficus trees along with 40 palm trees. Also donated that first year, were rocks to encircle each tree, painted white to match the base of the trees. Rocks were also used to designate a running/walking track, and they were also painted a spiffy white.

The park was also kicked off with donations of used tires that were used to create a childrens’ playground, a half basketball court, and a volleyball court.

The Monte Real Residents also asked for and received guarantees from the city’s department of public works, that they would get a once a week sprinkle of water for their new trees.

In the fall months of September, October and November, the group has organized and held monthly cultural events at the park during the evenings. A neighborhood block part they call Lunada Culturar. A fun, festive event that has become tradition and continues to this day.

The Monte Real Park is found inbetween Monte Real and La Libertad Boulevards and bus lines have been coordinated to have service pass by the park along Tecnologia Avenue.

Consuelo Cartensen of the Ecology Department assurred the community at Monte Real of getting some technical support by getting the city to install underground cable and telephone service at the park.

’’The habitants of this area need to count on a recreational park which will benefit the more than 3,000 families who live nearby . Having a park of this nature, assures an available place for a healthy lifestyle and gives our more than 2,000 kids in the area an outlet that would help their quality of life and minimize the vandalism and other negative things kids, with nothing to do, end up gravitating to.’’ said founding member and current Friends of Monte Real Park director, Daniel Martinez Valadez. Adding, that even with few options and limited government support, a lot of community creativity and dedicated volunteers, have helped this neighborhood of hard working individuals obtain the park of their dreams.

‘’We need a fun and safe place for our kids in this area to play.’’ said Martinez Valadez. ‘’We have organized our community in order to have a clean place to exercise, have some trees to find shade from the Cabo sun (Where the year round temperature has averaged 91 degrees) and we banded together to develop a better quality of life for our children and our neighbors. Next on our list, is to get lighting to have the park available after dark and to install a drinking water fountain.’’

At the most recent tree planting event, some volunteers arrived with picks in hand, digging out small trench holes and pits where 30 trees were planted and watered, as part of the grass roots community effort to beautify the once barren landscape within their their already quality constructed homes neighborhood. The park in Fraccionamento Monte Real is also not far from downtown San Jose, the art district, the old Catholic church and the central plaza.

There were games for children to entertain themselves, as their parents, aunts, uncles, and neighborhors all lent a hand planting trees, and cleaning up the area. There were bicycle races for youngsters and a few foot races also where kids were honored with medals on an awards stand much like the ones many have seen at the Olympic medals ceremonies.

Signs and banners were posted throught the night’s activities for everyone to see and consider. Stressing the words, ‘’Pensar Global, ActuarLocal.’’…Meaning, ‘’Think global, Act local.’’. This was an environmentally conscious message motivating locals to care for this wonderful land of Cabo. A city that maybe wasn’t the birthplace of the many citizens who live and reside here, but has become home to everyone involved.

Founder and organizer Daniel Martinez Valadez also coordinated a last-minute effort to have neighbors adopt a tree, which would be temporarily under their care. Obligating those same volunteers to watering and caring for that specific tree in the park until their plans to improve the lot are met with more government pesos.
Another projected area will feature an exercise circuit with specific training stations located around the park. There will be a stage constructed for special social events and cultural celebrations. A brand new cemented full court basketball area is in the works of being constructed within early next year with the help of people donating their time to building with donated bags of concrete mix.

With loudspeaker in hand, Daniel Martinez Valadez urged everyone in attendance to be responsible and help in the maintenance of keeping the pàrk clean and free of litter and dog feces left behind by lazy non-park caring dog owners. Martinez Valadez also invited anyone to get further involved and submit ideas on how to make the future park better for everyone.

Martinez emphasized to us the evolution of having built and maintained a rotating core group of volunteers named, ‘’The Friends of Monte Real Park’’ whose next move includes resubmitting plans to the new Administration of H. Ayuntamiento de Los Cabos or what is known as the city council. The group would like to have the the city council, in conjunction with the Department of Social Development, construct a multi-purpose center at the park and installing a water pipe from which they cann attach green hoses to water the trees.

For more information on their next planned Reforestation Event tentatively scheduled for Saturday, September 10 at 7 pm plesae contact volunteer director, Daniel Martinez Valadez at his cell phone 624-164-0620 or office number 624-123-5280 or by email at parquemontereal@hotmail.com. They are currently asking for donations of candy or toys to award the kids at the next event after the popular children’s sporting events and games.

‘’We need everyone’s help.’’ concluded Martinez Valadez. ‘’From government, to local business, and San Jose volunteers.’’

Summertime in Cabo, what a dream! Sun’s up and boiling; steaming hot, cold beers, Life! Mañana : Sunburn, bummer!

We all need some sun exposure, it’s our primary source of vitamin D, which helps us absorb calcium for stronger, healthier bones. But it doesn’t take much time in the sun for most people to get the vitamin D they need, and repeated unprotected exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays can cause skin damage, eye damage, immune system suppression, and skin cancer What’s important is to protect your family from exposure to UVA and UVB, the rays that cause skin damage. Most kids rack up between 50% and 80% of their lifetime sun exposure before age 18, so it’s important that parents teach their children how to enjoy fun in the sun safely. With the right precautions, you can greatly enjoy days in the Cabo sun

Now you know, Sunscreen or Sun-scream your choice will be…

With the Cabo summer heat, Dehydration can be a serious heat-related disease, as well as being a dangerous side-effect of diarrhea, vomiting and fever. Children and persons over the age of 60 are particularly susceptible to dehydration.

Under normal conditions, we all lose body water daily through sweat, tears, urine and stool. In a healthy person, this water is replaced by drinking fluids and eating foods that contain water. When a person becomes so sick with fever, diarrhea, or vomiting or if an individual is overexposed to the sun, dehydration occurs. This is caused when the body loses water content and essential body salts such as sodium, potassium, calcium bicarbonate and phosphate.

The following are the most common symptoms of dehydration, although each individual may experience symptoms differently. Symptoms may include:

thirst

less-frequent urination

dry skin

fatigue

light-headedness

dizziness

confusion

dry mouth and mucous membranes

increased heart rate and breathing

In children, additional symptoms may include:

dry mouth and tongue

no tears when crying

no wet diapers for more than 3 hours

sunken abdomen, eyes or cheeks

high fever

listlessness

irritability

skin that does not flatten when pinched and released

If caught early, dehydration can often be treated at home under a physician’s guidance. In children, directions for giving food and fluids will differ according to the cause of the dehydration, so it is important to consult your pediatrician.

In cases of mild dehydration, simple rehydration is recommended by drinking fluids. Many sports drinks on the market effectively restore body fluids, electrolytes, and salt balance.

For moderate dehydration, intravenous fluids may be required, although if caught early enough, simple rehydration may be effective. Cases of serious dehydration should be treated as a medical emergency, and hospitalization, along with intravenous fluids, is necessary. Immediate action should be taken.

Take precautionary measures to avoid the harmful effects of dehydration, including:

Drink plenty of fluids, especially when working or playing in the sun.

Make sure you are taking in more fluid than you are losing.

Try to schedule physical outdoor activities for the cooler parts of the day.

Drink appropriate sports drinks to help maintain electrolyte balance.

For infants and young children, solutions like Pedialyte will help maintain electrolyte balance during illness or heat exposure. Do not try to make fluid and salt solutions at home for children.

Although American distance running record holder, Alan Webb, did not run during his stay in Cabo during the fall, a great deal of plain, ordinary, health conscious folks awaken bright and early every morning, step out of their hotel resorts and head out for that therapeutic dose of jogging exercise. Of course, a great deal—if not all of them, take to hitting the concrete streets into Downtown San Lucas while the few others trudge through the soft sands of Medano.

Medano Beach is roughly about 2 miles from the Marina to the black rocks furthest away past the Rui Santa Fe/Rui Palace, making it a grueling 4 mile run round trip. The dry sand is extremely soft and very giving, wherefore, running on such surface is quite challenging and tough, but a very good work-out to say the least. Locals and visitors choosing to run on the wet sand below are more apt of getting their shoes totally soaked or partially wet. To run barefoot is best, but still, the 45 degree angle of the beach itself makes for an excruciatingly difficult, unbalanced run.

The pavement meanwhile, is in dark contrast to the soft sands because in Mexico (and Cabo as well), most streets are poured of concrete and not the softer tar streets of our American neighbors to the north. What many visitor’s staying in San Lucas don’t realize is they have perfectly soft, sandy dirt trails to get in some very good runs on a more leg friendly, suitable surface.

For guests checked in at the centralized beach row resorts of Cabo Villas, Casa Dorada, Melia, Pueblo Bonito Blanco y Rose’, Cascadas, Villas del Arco, La Estancia, and Villas de Palmar, there are several dirt trail options. Anyone can get a nice easy run on the trails that are next to the lighted soccer fields at the entrance to San Lucas. This path is used in horseback riding excursions and is perfectly safe and can be found just a short jog away from the aforementioned cluster of hotels. At the entrance to Villas del Arco, where the green taxis are parked, is a dirt trail that leads to the front of the Rui Resorts for about a mile in length. Jogging past the Rui Resorts takes visitors and locals alike, along a dirt trail that passes the Cabo San Lucas Cemetery and ends just a few hundred yards beyond that. In all, a round trip run on this course would account for an easy 4 mile distance.

With rental cars, visitors can take Mexican Federal Highway 19 or what many locals and visitors alike, commonly refer to as the Pacific Road to Todos Santos and La Paz. Located just a short 15-20 minutes away is the secluded popular public accessible Pozo Cota Beach, where Baja Adventures and Amigo Tours entertain tourists and guests with their horseback riding tours and ATV trail and beach excursions.

At the north end of Pozo Coto Beach is a dirt trail that leads runners along the Pacific Ocean on a very wide path nestled against the mountains which has a few very steep challenging hills but an overall tremendous experience running with the ocean waves and quiet tranquility a mere thirty to forty yards below. The trail reaches a two mile point that leaves runners at the foot of a breathtaking view of Migrino Beach. Traversing down onto the beach, runners can there enjoy a beach run like no other on perfectly level wet sand stretching out for about two miles from there to the rocky point where local fisherman cast from the rocks and reel in buckets upon buckets of red snapper rock fish, mahi mahi, ling cod and small tunas.

The 8 mile total distance of this run is only for the most serious of athletes but can easily be enjoyed to certain spots of this wonderful breathtaking escape by even the most amateur of joggers. At San Pedro Beach, runners and joggers alike, are in for a treat—treading through this immaculate beach surrounded by clusters of high palm trees that bless those on foot with shade while gliding–in their nikes, reeboks or other brand name shoes–through it’s majestic calm and natural beauty. While one cannot tread on a route that would lead to an 8 to 10 mile run, people can run loops around this jewel of soft sand and trails and still get in whatever mileage or endurance exercise one prefers.

By Fernando B. Rodriguez

When visitors arrive in Cabo, their first available mode of transportation is the obvious taxi or shuttle which generally cost anywhere from $ 10-15 US dollars if guests are staying in the nearby San Jose del Cabo high end resorts of Grand Mayan, Temptations, Royal Solaris, El Faro, or Barcelo or lesser known, modest rate hotels/motels in San Jose. If people need to get to their resort/hotel a little further along the one and only highway corridor going from San Jose del Cabo into San Lucas, the taxi shuttle rate goes up substantially and taps out at $ 85 US Dollars for those going to the resorts furthest away from the airport which are Pueblo Bonito Sunset, Playa Grande, Grand Solmar, and Wyndham-Tesoro.

Many tourists arrive with rental cars already waiting and still others purchase their vehicles to get around best in Los Cabos at the many rent-a-car outlets available

within walking distance at both San Jose del Cabo Airport Terminals.

From San Jose del Cabo (Sleepy Town) visitors can get to Cabo San Lucas (Party Town) from 5:00 a.m. in the morning until 11:00 p.m. at night on the big city oublic transporatation bus called the SuburCabo. Bus fare is only 25 pesos or roughly $ 2 US dollars, depending on the exchange rate at that particular day, although the rate has been a at pretty steady low to mid high 10.8 – 11.7. These low cost bus fares sometimes include cultural Mexican musicians who board the the bus, play a tume or three and disembark, politely asking for change/tips for their various performances and/or lyrically vocal renditions of Mexican Classic songs.

No trains or horses are available to take guests from the airport to their Cabo paradise destination. Nor are there rental helicopters to dash visitors to the resort of their choice. It’s just the modern era Mexican taxi, shuttles, rent-a-cars and public transportation buses. Once in either San Jose del Cabo or Cabo San Lucas though, visitors can easily foot it everywhere since everything is within walking distance. Restaurants, Night Clubs, Art Galleries, Specialty Stores and the beach are all just a hop and a skip away.

by Vic Vertigo

I expected many changes when I moved to Mexico. I expected a better tan, better tacos, a sharp increase in tequila hangovers, and a vast improvement in my tortured Spanish. What I didn’t expect was to develop a ravenous appetite for crickets.

I hadn’t eaten bugs since I owned a motorcycle, and that was an involuntary byproduct of being too stupid to ride with my face shield down. I knew there were places in the world where people ate insects, but I assumed they were just biding their time until McDonalds opened a franchise in their remote village, or they had run out of fresh lemur. I couldn’t imagine anyone voluntarily subjecting themselves to these leg heavy snacks unless they were trying to impress photographers from National Geographic with their primitive bona fides.

Well, I must offer a mea culpa, or more accurately a mea gulpa, since I’ve been eating so many crickets lately it has been suggested that I buy a funnel. I eat them in snack bowls like popcorn, I sprinkle them on my cereal in the morning, and occasionally carry them with me on walks like trail mix. I’ve developed an addiction, and I need my fix. Too long between crickets and I start scratching myself and muttering like a dime store junke. “They’ve got a lot of protein,” I often scream as well meaning friends try to wrest the bag from my hand.

My problem began on an outback safari tour from Cabo Adventures. After lunch, there was an interactive lesson on tequila and mezcal from guide David Alba. Now, I’ve never had any problems with tequila. I consider it a friend, albeit one that punches me in the face repeatedly if we spend too much time together. Mezcal is another story. I have hazy memories of college, when a bottle of this unholy mixture of single malt scotch and gasoline was a guarantee of court dates and community service raking leaves by the side of a midwestern highway.

After a few drinks, Alba assured me that crickets are a time honored pairing for mezcal, kind of like beer and peanuts, or Stilton with a bottle of vintage port. Unwilling to back down from any challenge when drunk, I washed the cricket down with mezcal and was surprised to discover that it wasn’t bad at all, particularly when seasoned with lemon, salt, and chile powder. In fact, it was good enough that I figured another couldn’t hurt. I retained enough willpower to turn down the caterpillar at the bottom of the mezcal bottle, but as it happens, crickets have proved to be a gateway drug.

Many gringos mistake the caterpillar for a worm, but it is actually a member of the species hypoptis agavis, a moth larvae commonly found in the maguey plant that serves as the basis of mezcal. Like agave, the maguey is a succulent plant that that stores a lot of water. After the metamorphosis of the moth into a butterfly, this creature only flies at night, serving as a sort of symbolic guardian angel for all mezcal drinkers. Or perhaps that is just a figment of my insect-ridden imagination, since the caterpillar is not the hallucinogen many think, having none of the psychoactive properties of mescaline.

Although the maguey plant is common to many parts of Mexico, most mezcal is made in Oaxaca, home to the International Mezcal Festival, held yearly since 1997. According to Alba, mezcal is often used as part of ceremonial housewarmings in Oaxaca, with the bottle inverted so that the caterpillar may be easily removed, salted, and offered to guests with a shot of the liquor. It is also traditional at holiday gatherings to offer the caterpillar to the oldest person present as a sign of respect (wouldn’t you rather eat a salted caterpillar than Aunt Ethel’s fruitcake?).

Oaxaca is also the center of cricket eating in Mexico, dating back to the Zapotec and Mixtec cultures. Of the 3687 species of edible insects, over 400 are found in Mexico. In Oaxaca, crickets, calledgrillos or chapulines in their fried form, are a highly nutritional, protein-rich element of a well balanced diet. They are said to possess twice the protein of raw meat and fish, are rich in unsaturated fats as well as vitamins and minerals, and put less of a strain on the environment than the grazing of animals for meat consumption (I continue to maintain that my increasing reliance on crickets is a function of my concern for the continued well-being of the planet).

Crickets in Oaxaca are sold according to size, with small crickets being the most sought after, largely, one assumes, because they are harder to catch. Most are boiled or fried, and collected during the spring and summer months, meaning now is an excellent time to enjoy fresh cricket. (In addition to stuffing myself with cricket appetizers, I am currently drying and powdering them in preparation for the long winter months).

Other sought after delicacies include bees, wasps, worms, and ants, many of which can be found in Oaxacan tacos. Expect to pay premium prices for ant and cricket tacos. Chocolate cricket cookies are also popular, as are the fly larvae known as ahuatle, or the “Mexican caviar.” Tlayuda is a traditional dish consisting of baked tortilla, refried beans, vegetables, a variety of meat options including pork and chorizo, and topped with roasted grasshoppers. I have yet to try Tlayuda, but I am currently checking airline prices in the off chance I can get to Oaxaca during the height oforthoptera season.

As far as I have been able to determine, the only place to buy crickets in San Lucas is a small store with no name near Cabo Dolphins, run by a couple from Oaxaca. They have been given favored nation status by the newly formed Cabo Cricket Eating Club, of which I am founder and president. Prospective members should be assured that during their travels to the United States, reciprocal privileges are being negotiated with the Insect Club in Washington D.C., as well as B.A.B.E.S., the Bay Area Bug Eating Society, both of which honor the ancient art of entomophagy (the eating of insects).

The very first opportunity to get cash, either in U.S. dollars or Mexican peso, is at the airport. First, in the hall where tourists pick up their luggage there are international cash exchange windows that generally trade currency at below market rate. Second, there are ATM machines at the restaurants/gift shop/bar area of bother terminal 1 and termnial 2. And finally, when tourists arrive at their respective resorts, the hotels generally have an ATM at the front desk lobby or somewhere nearby. Sometimes near their gift shops or restaurants.

Once visitor’s arrive in either Cabo San Lucas or San Jose del Cabo, banks, and ATM’s are in abundance at various places throughout their downtown tourist areas. Most noticably, on the main boulevard or highway corridor, which is the only road leading from the airport to paradise. Oxxo, for example have ATM’s at all their 7-11 open 24 hour-type stores. Grocery stores too, like some of the major chains on the main strip such as WalMart and Costco have ATM’s readily available for use. At the Marina in San Lucas or Puert Paraiso, there are ATM’s scattered inside and out of the heavily traversed dining and shopping area known on one end, as ”The Golden Zone”. At Medano Beach, people draw money from cash machines located inside the delectable, boisterous, fun, festive and romantic restaurants located there.

And while maybe some, may still have trouble accessing cash and finding the machine of their need, the more than helpful, courteous, nice people of Los Cabos will surely assist and point anyone in the nearest direction to help them get some cash, funds, mula, cake, paper, scrilla, dinero.

While the Arch in Cabo San Lucas will forever remain a natural wonder, never changing. The way to get to the famous rock formation rarely will be improved upon from the already standard means of getting there. Boarding a water taxi of course, with big groups or just a few friends, is by far the easiest and most traditional way to get there, but others trek across San Lucas Bay in rented kayaks and get there individually or paired with another aquatic adventurer, paddling along and traversing from the sands of Medano to Lovers Beach.

With the advent and rise in poularity of the stand up paddle board, indivuals have been seen gradually inching their way to the Arch, with paddle in hand and surfboard underneath. Hikers, if they can be identified as such, have arrived at the Arch and Lovers Beach, by meticulously walking or hanging on, really—Along the mountain connecting the Marina with the Arch, although, it’s more of a combined hike and swim as there are areas people need to get wet in order to continue along the ardeous journey along nature’s rocky avenue to the Arch.

Drinking water fountains are available almost anywhere in the U.S.. At parks, libraries, in movie theaters, at schools, offices and restaurants too. Not so in Cabo. In Los Cabos, there are no water fountains anywhere it seems. None at the Deportivo Parks in San Lucas nor San Jose, where athletes in training bring their own bottled waters to quench their post work out thirst. And so, one has to ponder why such dearth of water supply atrocities exist in this hot, blistering area of 200,000.

And yet, the much talked about infamous Montezuma’s Revenge isn’t and hasn’t been that big of a concern anymore during this modern era of bottled and purified water.

It just so happens that during my year and a half in Cabo San Lucas and 5 years in Mexican cities like Morelia, Michoacan, Tijuana, and Rosarito. Baja California..I have at times mixed tang with faucet water and also microwaved and boiled tea using that same forebodingly unhealthy tap water and much to my dismay and chagrin—Nothing has ever happened.

No stomach cramps, no rush visit to the doctor, no vomitting, no nausea….No nothing. No Nada

It’s as if I were a kid all over again drinking water from the green hose while watering the lawn or washing a car. Drinking from the tap water in the kitchen as a youth and thinking nothing of it ‘cuz there apparently wasn’t anything to worry about back then when it came to American tap water. And now honestly, there doesn’t sem to be anything wrong with drinking the tap water in Cabo because I’ve done it—At times out of necessity where our 5 gallon water jug had run dry and I braved the rumors and just thought, ”The heck with it..” as I tossed back swig after swig of Cabo San Lucas tap water at the end of a 6 mile run or after a few several rounds of pick-up basketball games only to awaken the next day in pretty much the same not-so-perfect aging health.

A well educated friend who has been in Cabo for over 3 years was ranting and raving about his last, got-sick from drinking tap water episode in Mexico, when he paused, as I inquired what part of the Republic of this country did that occurr and he turned quiet and contemplative, answering, ”No, that wasn’t in Cabo. It happened in mainland Sonora, years ago”. By modern standards, Mexico has done a tremendous job in providing dinkable water to all of it’s citizens and Cabo has an abundance of spring fed water undrneath and throughout it’s populace as this region feeds off the many springs, ponds and lakes of natural water found in the Canyons above and around Cabo Can Lucas and Todos Santos.

The water treatment systems in San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas produce water that meets most standards for purity and cleanliness.

But for those overly concerned citizens and visitors to Cabo, there is plenty of bottled water at every resort, at WalMart, Mega, Costco, and Oxxo’s—(Mexico’s version of 7-11 ). Plus, all of the major hotels purify their water or serve purified water

By Fernando Rodriguez

Several years ago—As the economy and jobs took a downward devastating spiral, I readily accepted a menial winter season job at a recycling center in Northern California for about a week. A job located on the outskirts of town, obtained through a mutual friend at a temp agency. During that short period of time, I learned first hand, the inner workings of a recycling center slash garbage dump.

Upon our early morning arrival inside the humungous junkyard warehouse, a small group of us would start work promptly. Standing individually at our designated stations next to a large conveyer belt ( 6 feet wide) rolling from left to right in front of us, loaded with every imaginable sort of refuse. Behind and below each of us were very large metal dumpsters containing whatever each of us was assigned to pull off the conveyer belt with our gloved hands, goggles and protective masks.

Two persons, standing opposite each other, would begin the work day pulling off the moving conveyer belt, whatever recycables they were stationed above. Some would sort rocks , of various sizes, while other crew members would be yanking aluminum cans, bottles or glass, wood, and still others grabbing paper items, and dropping those objects into the dumpsters at their area.

And this basically, is how I thought they might recycle trash in Cabo San Lucas at the main dump yard located up the hill away from town on the Pacific highway that leads from San Lucas towards Todos Santos.

The dump site has been in existence and fully functional since the city’s growth warrranted building such a site to conatin and manage the area’s garbage while also transitioning to a more greener community.

Of course, on my visit to the only local garbage dump site in Cabo San Lucas, there was no giant warehouse with the expensive modern day conveyer belt, nor was there the heavy equpiment operator, lifting mounds upon mounds of trash onto a non-existent conveyer belt into a shaded employee work place with individuals laboring at seperating trash from recycable goods.

Instead, what I found was a garbage dump site where trash is dropped from the massive white and green colored trucks onto dirt and garbage filled mounds where an ant-like work force of laborers ascend on the site and commence to prowl through the refuse and hand pick all recycables and toss them to assisting crew members, who in turn, gather into medium sized collection crates and large potato sack duffle bags—whatever plastic, aluminum and other recycable goods their partners have thrown in their direction. From there, workers traverse on foot across and through the maze of trash filled mounds to designated recycable collection stations

Small to medium sized rocks, which in the US are sifted from the heaps of trash to be used and sold later to construction type outfits and businesses, who purchase such items to use during any cement based projects are not recycled here in Mexico.

Wood of any kind, that in the US is also recycled at dumpsites to be transformed in later stages to paper, is also not considered recycable worthy here in Los Cabos, because A) wood is scarce to begin with and very few have it to dispose of anyways and B) any small scraps that do not find their way to the trash are most often used in most disparingly poor neighborhoods as firewood to keep warm in the evenings and other times as cooking timber at outside kitchen type areas.

Coarse metal, copper and steel remain popular recycable goods and are therefore bundled onto wheel barrows and transported to their respective stations by the Cabo San Lucas trash-seperating workers who endure the brunt of the heat while going about their not so glamorous jobs.

San Jose del Cabo’s dump site receives much of it’s garbage deliveries from trucks bringing the haul in from Cabo San Lucas. According to SEMARNAT (The Mexican Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources–Which is a federal government agency whose main purpose is to promote the protection, restoration and conservation of ecosystems and natural resources) the number of transportation trucks used for the collection of solid municipal organic and inorganic waste in the 32 states in the Country of Mexico is somewhere in the neighborhood of 7,000 heavy duty vehicles.

The Nation of Mexico, which has 2,400 municipalities and whose overall population hoovers at 112.3 million people are using a grand total of just 58 sanitary landfills. That’s roughly two garbage dumpsites for almsot each state in nearly all the country. Some are getting by with one sole dumping place responsible for all the waste in those respective communities, cities, and states.

Mexico’s environmental protection regulatory system has paved the way for the country’s 32 states to be accountable for implementing local laws and programs to manage solid city-spawned waste. As of a few years ago, every 32 states have implemented near-identical programs to properly deal with the garbage generated in thier respective states. Which, as of 2006, were generating a combined daily total of 94,000 tons of waste. Some of it recycable, much of it not.

A greater concern about trash and recycling here in Los Cabos, is the refuse left on the beach by both non-caring tourists and locals alike. What is abundantly clear on a regular near daily basis at the beach are the young kids, around 10-12 years of age, who comb Medano Beach all the way across the entire area, beginning at Hacienda and passing Cabo Villas, Casa Dorada, Me by Melia, Pueblo Bonito Blanco and Rose’, Cascadas, Villas del Arco, Estancia, Palmar, and finally the Rui Palace, Rui Santa Fe and back. Picking up aluminum cans as they go about filling their black garbage bags with recycable goods that will translate to money at nearby recycling stations in Cabo San Lucas.

In 1988, Pender Island’s Michelle Marsden advocated the protection of marine life in Mexico through her anti-litter initiatives generated from the Cabo San Lucas recycling project she founded named ALTO, Spanish for STOP, meaning Against Litter Thrown Overboard.

In 1989, the married mother and avid sailer, launched a Baja California Coastal Clean-Up Campaign, coordinating beach clean ups by concerned volunteers in coastal communities as far north as Rosarito and Playas de Tijuana to as far south as our dearly, beloved, Cabo San Lucas. Her clean beach and litter free ocean aspirations, blossoming into a yearly spring and fall event—held typically in conjunction with earth day rallies and other environmental and ecological projects.

As far back as 2006, Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo were just 2 of 16 cities who expressed written interest in purchasing some type of solid waste equipment such as land fill compactors, truck washing tools, hoists, lifts, on-board computers and scales, transfer trailers, transportation trucks, cranes, crushers, shredders, wood chippers, scrapers, methane analyzing instraments and equipment for the recycling of corrugated boxes, paper, tin cans, plastic bottles and garbage incinerators.

Over time, Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo and even Todos Santos are developing into the best municipal dumps this region could hope for. Seth Romans of Cabo Expeditions states: “We want all of our tourists and potential residents to experience the very best of a clean and safe Los Cabos”

Cabo Expeditions, Pueblo Bonito Resorts and the Letty Coppel foundation assist the community with an environmental and ecological program in which coordinated efforts have led to the cleaning of local beaches while Cabo Expeditions Scuba Divers scoop up trash dumped in the Sea of Cortez around the arch and Lover’s Beach. The trash is always recycled and what remains taken promptly to the city dump. In Cabo San Lucas, it is prohibited to dump trash, litter or substances that may cause harm to the aquatic flora, fauna and sea life.

Yo Reciclo is a local non-profit organization which offers a monthly drop off zone in San Jose del Cabo (Empty lot adjacent to Farmacia Super Doroda, on HW1 approaching downtown) for the community to bring all their recyclable products. This event takes place every first Thursday of every month from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

These various clean-up campaigns, while they pale in comparison to street pick up recycling programs and centers all acorss the board in America, are shining examples of Mexico and Los Cabos doing all that we can in recycling, while also raising environmental consciousness regarding the care and protection of our planet and this beautiful, wonderful, near litter free, coastal section of mother earth, called Los Cabos.

While the most famous and widely-recognized of all religous places of worship in Cabo San Lucasis the Catholic Church, located on Cabo San Lucas Road and Zapata Street, This small, renovated,Iglesia de Santuario de Guadalupe, built by the Spanish in 1730, is but a landmark to the diverse religous community that now resides in our growing city of this Baja Cailfornia Sur Peninsula.

With mass held in Spanish on Saturdays at 7:00 pm and Sundays at 12:00 noon and 8:00 pm. This unique, Bi-lingual Church, with its small but original interior and stucco facade intact, is still so grounded in historical traditions—Nuns can be seen throughout the city at various times of the day and week, walking together, as they go about their charitable works. The church is also known as the Catholic Church of San Lucas.

The English Congregation for Jehovah’s Witnesses Kingdom Hall is located a bit further away from the downtown area than most others churches, but still within walking distance for many of it’s church members attending services En Ingles Sundays at 4:00 p.m.and Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m.

Cabo San Lucas’ public transportation bus routes cover most all of the various differentdenominational churches in this growing city of 200,000. Many of which are the English speaking American and Canadian parishionerss these modern day Ministries were created from and for whom, they were constructed to unify and serve.

“Whenever any of our Jehovah Witness brothers and sisters or families arrive in Cabo San Lucas from anywhere in the world, whether it be from any state in Mexico or from the United States of America, we are here to welcome them with a place to live and assist in helping them find work,“ explained one of their highly visible, street strolling, door knocking members.

Stating also that, “We have Jehovah Witnesses who have been here in Cabo long before it became what it is now, who own real estate in several different neighborhoods and offer newcomers affordable rental apartments to help them get situated in Cabo or San Jose del Cabo.“

Handing me their WatchTower Publishing 32 page comic book sized magazine titled “Awake´´ as well as a 4 sided color leaflet with the headline, ´´Do You Want To Know The Truth?“.

“Our Jehovah Witness Church Members also assist newcomers in obtaining jobs based on their qualifications and experience.“ Continued their talkative representative. Explaining that they have many worshippers who have been here the longest and can help other church members in getting in the door at their place of employment or business. “We are all one family and treat each other as such,“ added the Jehovah Witness spokeman for the day, before moving along their walking route, preaching the word of Jehovah Witness salvation.

The Cabo San Lucas Mormons of Latter Day Saints meanwhile, not only offer services in both Spanish and English, but also coordinate–in conjunction with their Salt Lake City, Utah based counterparts—A Mormon single’s Valentines get-away retreat with next year’s 2012 Cruise Lady Cruise Ship stop in Los Cabos slated for February 12-17 with Opera singing guest Michael Ballam, Ph.D providing his fascinating experiences and talented performances while at sea.

.

Once in Cabo, an optional snorkeling tour is available as well as a group sailing adventure. The very same Cabo San Lucas Mormons also promote a family oriented identical cruise later in March 11-16, 2012 of next year with headliner speakers Richard and Linda Eyre, who have been guests on shows like Oprah, Today and the CBS Early Show. Authors of many Mormon related books, including Empty Nest: Parenting Solutions for everyday Parenting Challenges, the Eyres are also founders of valuesparenting.com and joyschools.com. Mormons book this CaboSan Lucas excursion at a 1-800 number linked to a Salt Lake City, Utah website for Mormons.

The Mormons of Cabo San Lucas Church of Latter Day Saints are equally helpful with assisting new arrivals in their transition to get acclimated within this delightful Mexican Resort Paradise. Procurring a stable place of residence as well as prospecting for viable job opportunities for incoming fellow worshipers.

An Apostolic Church down the street from the Wyndham/Tesoro on Guerrero Street, holds services in Spanish on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Celebrating afterwards on the patio out front in a manner that is reminiscent of a close knit family-style pot luck barbeque. Their small congregation mingling together in peaceful harmony and tranqulity amidst the tourist-laden, sometimes not so quiet,English language speaking visitors which dominate the pedestrian populated street.

Further up and a few blocks away, next to the Hotel Santa Fe on Alvaro Obregon and Ocampo Streets, the Christian Chapel Amistad, blends live Spanish Christian music with it’s biblical sermons at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday nights also, along with the traditional Sunday service at 11:00 a.m.

This Church and its membership is very large and parking is sometimes only available from several blocks away for its many parishioners, who diligently attend this vibrant, enthusiastic, service. Spanish speaking members, whose vehicles dot the automobile crowded streets mentioned a lengthy connection with this church, which has grown recently, adding English speaking Bible Studies to its list of membership services.

´´It’s something that has grown out of neccessity,’’ stated one of their long-time members in fairly goood english. ´´Little by little, people continued periodically asking, if we had services in English and we moved towards providing that in an English only Bible Study, which has 12 members who attend regularly and are learning a little Christian Spanish.´´

The Christian Family Center Assembly of God is located further up away from downtown at Felix Ortega and Mendoza Streets, offering English services Sundays at 10.00 a .m.and later that evening at 6:00 p.m.

Cabo San Lucas’ public transportation bus routes cover most all of the churches mentioned in this growing city of 200,000. Many of which are the English speaking American and Canadian parishioners these modern day Ministries were created from and for whom they were constructed to unify and serve.

The Cabo English Church is run by Pastor Mike Gratzke who bagan his ministry back in early 1982. His congregation has since grown to its current estimated membership of 200 loyal parishioners who are diligently engaged in giving back to the community volunteering with several notable Cabo San Lucas Charities like the childrens orphanage, Cruz Roja, Bomberos de Cabo San Lucas.

In San Jose del Cabo, one of the most impressive English Speaking Churches is the Calvary ChapelLos Cabos, a friendly, welcoming, non-denominational Christian Church which is located near the downtown Municipal Market, not far from the oldest Catholic Churches in this region, The Mision de San Jose del Cabo Anuiti.

At Calvary Chapel, English Services are held Sundays at 10:00 a.m. and on that identical to every other church mid-week date of Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m.

San Jose’s Historic Catholic Church, founded by the Jesuit Priest Nicolas Tamaral in 1730, was rebuilt after the hurricane of 1918 where renovating workers preserved the original structure and some of its walls that represent the mosaic that relates to the martydom of the tortured priest who helped evangelize much of the inhabitants of the land during his missionary lifetime.

While Spanish services and mass are held daily throughout the week at 7:00 p.m. at the ever popular, picturesque Maine Square location, English mass is only available on Sundays at 12:00noon.

Presently, Father Juvencio Gonzalez runs the ancient Catholic Church, while at Templo BetsanChula Vista, located up the hill at Formula Uno, Ministers Howard and Ron, lead the English Bible Studies at their Church in the Alcala Javier Towers, located on Mechor Ocampo Street and Obregon Avenue.

Even though Catholicism is the dominant religion in the Republic of Mexico, English services are held throughout Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo–Meeting the needs of the various different American and Canadian born parishioners that exist within this wonderful area many call home.

By Fernando B. Rodriguez

Don’t be alarmed. There aren’t any drug wars or cartel related violence here in Los Cabos. This caboexclusive.net blog isn’t about an impending early morning Tsunami or Hurricane. It’s just a cautionary tale of the common petty theft dangers that loom in the early morning hours in downtown Cabo San Lucas, particularly near Cabo Wabo, where tourists are most vulnurable—and common victims to the centuries-old trade of pick pockets.

Overly intoxicated tourists—are the easiest prey to the elementary-aged chicklets kids who rush, crowd and brush at their side, leaving the enibriated tourits without their leather, velcro wallets and/or money clips.

In one instance during Spring Break, two college students studying to earn their degrees at the University of Colorado State, were bumped into by an older Mexican National—when confronted by the two Americans about their missing camera—-Replied that he didn’t take their camera when bumping into each other, but would be able to find it for a hundred dollars.

A fight ensued and the minor misdemeaner mayhem was somewhat contained and all involved parties were broken up and asked to go about their way. While no camera was ever returned, the students warned everyone they knew at their resort the following day about their misfortune and suggested everyone stay away from the area where the seeminly innocent young predators, posing as disadvantaged, poverty stricken bubble game peddlers, mine for would be back pocket, cash filled wallet-toting drunken tourists.

The following night, a group of cruise ship revelers partied in post wedding pleasure at a watering hole down the street from the so-called camera calamity at the Cabo Wabo Jungle Bar area and were similarly ambushed by the chiklet bandidos, whose failed attempts at back pocket wallet lifting were thwarted by the pre-advised party of five. Readily swatting away chicklet kid hand lunges towards their waist, and back pockets.

Be therefore advised, and properly forewarned of the late night festive outings during the wee hours in Cabo that can leave any local resident, or visiting tourist, out of their vacation cash and credit cards.

By Fernando B. Rodriguez

In San Lucas, at a resort on Medano Beach, a pair of female friends visiting Cabo for the first time from their respective states of Texas and Oklahoma were spending their afternoon, happily reunited, contemplating what to do during their planned BFF getaway of Mid -April .

As they sipped their tri-colored Superman cocktails, basking in the sunny warmth of this tropical Southern Baja Pennisula paradise, the talkative duo questioned why they hadn’t received anything after their hour and a half timeshare presentation.

When asked where they had received their timeshare invitation, they replied that it had been in their hotel lobby with one of the pretty concierge ladies, whom they suddenly remembered, conceding that they had indeed been given a complimentary discount card towards the restaurants at their resort and reduced prices for any water activities on Medano Beach.

Elaborating further, they mentioned having bypassed everyone at the airport trying to get them to stop because of the specific instructions they had obtained from tripadvisor.com advising them to walk directly past the two doors and avoid the aggressive timeshare people who would be attempting to stop them and sell them a hotel/resort timeshare.

‘That’s too bad’. I told them. Explaining that those men and women they successfully dodged at the airport, who represent every major 5 star resort on the Cabo San Lucas-San Jose del Cabo Corridor, all generally have a pretty nice budget—offering visitors an array of activities, cash, and even transportation back to the airport at the end of a their stay, just for checking out their resort and enduring an hour and a half timeshare presentation.

Hearing this, the two college graduate friends in their timeshare qualifying thirties, wondered what they could have possibly received had they not been so intent on rushing through the wave of timeshare hotel representatives at the airport. Each feeling somewhat cheated out of the deals, perks, and tours because they wittingly followed the advice from the popular website many visitors use when planning their trips to this picturesque Mexican beach and it’s sun-filled treasures.

‘Can you hook us up?’ they asked.

And I did. Calling an OPC from a nearby resort from whom they received at their second timeshare presentation in as many days—Sunset dinner booze cruise passes for two, a glass bottomboat ride out to Lover’s Beach/Land’s End Arch and a taxi shuttle return to the airport on the final morning of their 6 day sping vacation.

Though not quite ready to purchase a timeshare in Cabo San Lucas at this time in their young lives and careers, they spoke highly of the resort they went to visit, while also appreciating their resort of choice during their stay. And they left to enjoy their tours and activities the next few days, feeling better about the pre-planned misinformation they paid heed to in avoiding the good deals offered at the so called Äirport Shark Tank¨ Remarking that, Now–they knew better.

And now hopefully too, visitor’s at our site, can hear the flip side of the timeshare presentation coin and possibly take advantage of the airport super packages awarded for but an hour and a half of one’s time.
